Competition Guidelines

Eligibility

  1. The I Publish Press 2006-7 Writing Competition is open to international writers 18 years and older.
  2. Submissions from the publishers and employees of I Publish Press, or members of their immediate families, cannot be considered.
  3. All submissions must contain original material, and may not have been previously published, accepted for publication, or have been a winner in another competition prior to the February 28, 2007 deadline.
  4. Any work containing illegal, unlawful or objectionable material including, but not limited to pornography, gross obscenity, or hate speech, will not be considered. Any work that contains plagiarism or which violates existing copyright will not be considered.
  5. Any work of fiction written in English with a length of 60,000-120,000 words (including novels, short story collections, and long narrative poems) will be considered.

Writers are invited to submit as many manuscripts as they wish. Different versions of the same manuscript will be treated as separate submissions.

Entry Fee

$15 per submission. Acceptable payment methods: PayPal (USD) and CertaPay (CAD - Canadian residents only). The entry fee is non-refundable.

Format

  1. Standard manuscript format - MS Word or PDF document, double-spaced, with a header on each page to include manuscript title and page number only. You may choose to compress your file (.zip) to reduce the size.
  2. Please use your last name and the day/month of your submission as the file name (e.g. lastname-ddmm.pdf or lastname-ddmm.zip) of your upload file.
  3. Entries must be submitted online, using the file upload function on this page.
  4. Hard copy entries cannot be accepted.
  5. All submissions must include a cover page listing
    • the writer's name
    • address
    • e-mail address
    • phone number
    • entry title
    • word length
    • a short (250 word maximum) summary

All information received will be handled according to our privacy policy.

Only work which conforms to all the guidelines will be considered. Due to the volume of entries, we are unable to contact writers whose entries are incomplete.

Receipt of each entry will be acknowledged via e-mail.

No entries will be returned.

Submission Deadline

All entries must be received by 11:59 p.m. Pacific Standard Time, February 28, 2007. No late entries will be considered.

Competition Details

Final judges: Publishers of I Publish Press.

Winning entries must conform to editorial standards for published works of fiction, including but not limited to proper grammar, continuity, spelling, punctuation, and accuracy of statements of fact.

Judging Criteria: Submissions will be judged on originality, the quality of writing, readiness for publication, and literary merit.

Winners will be informed by email no later than 12:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, March 31, 2007. Winners will be listed on the I Publish Press websites in the week following.

Prizes

Up to twelve winners will be selected from eligible entries.

All winning entries will receive:

  • ISBN Number and CIP Data
  • Stock cover art
  • Digital publication in at least 5 formats
  • A minimum of three printed copies provided to the author
  • Legal Deposit in the National Library of Canada
  • Distribution via all I Publish Press distribution channels
  • Promotion via all I Publish Press promotion channels
  • Listing in Books in Print
  • Listing in Neilson Book Data

No cash equivalent will be available

Legal

  1. The author guarantees that submissions contain original, previously unpublished material only. The author will indemnify and hold harmless I Publish Press in the case of plagiarism or violations of existing copyright on the part of the author.
  2. Submission precludes the author from granting first right of publication of the manuscript entered to any entity other than I Publish Press for the duration of the competition, unless the author withdraws the submission from the competition.
  3. An author may, at any time prior to the competition deadline, withdraw their submission(s) by email request to competition at ipublishpress.com. Upon receipt of a withdrawal request, I Publish Press will destroy any and all copies of said submission that are under its control.
  4. Entry fees are non-refundable.
  5. In order to receive their prize, winning authors must enter into a Competition Author Agreement with I Publish Press, which will be provided to competition winners upon their selection. If a winner refuses to accept the terms of the Competition Author Agreement, such a refusal will constitute a withdrawal by the author of the selected entry.
  6. If for any reason a winning submission cannot be published, a new winner will be selected.
  7. Winners consent to the use of their name and photograph by I Publish Press for publicity purposes.
  8. In some cases, prizes might not be awarded exactly as noted, according to the discretion of the judges and I Publish Press.
